Daily

  • Visual pool inspection — 5 min, year-round. DIY: yes ($0); pro: $0.
    Visually inspect for algae growth, debris, water clarity, equipment operation, unusual odors, leaks, or surface damage. Quick sweep of pool area.
    If skipped: Early warning signs of problems missed, small issues become expensive repairs, safety hazards undetected

Weekly

  • Skimmer basket cleaning — 5 min, summer. DIY: yes ($0); pro: $0.
    Empty debris (leaves, insects, dirt) from skimmer baskets. In LA summer with heavy use, check 2-3 times weekly. Remove basket and dump contents into trash.
    If skipped: Clogged skimmer reduces water circulation, decreased filtration efficiency, algae growth, equipment strain
  • Pump strainer basket cleaning — 10 min, summer. DIY: yes ($0); pro: $0.
    Clean the pump strainer basket (pre-filter) which catches debris before it reaches the pump. Shut off pump, open strainer housing, remove and clean basket.
    If skipped: Debris clogs pump strainer, causes pump to lose prime, equipment shutdown, potential pump damage
  • Pressure gauge check — 2 min, year-round. DIY: yes ($0 (gauge included on filter)); pro: $0.
    Check filter pressure gauge to monitor filter cleanliness. Normal range varies by filter type (usually 10-20 psi). If pressure rises 8-10 psi above baseline, backwashing needed.
    If skipped: Filter clogs undetected, water circulation decreases, algae growth accelerates, equipment strain leads to failures
  • Filter backwash — 15 min, spring, summer, fall. DIY: yes ($0 (except DE replacement at backwash: $5-15)); pro: $0.
    Reverse water flow through filter to flush accumulated debris. For DE filters: turn off pump, switch multiport to backwash, turn on, flush until water runs clear, switch to normal. For sand filters: same process but watch sight glass. LA summer heat increases debris.
    If skipped: Filter clogs completely, circulation stops, algae blooms, equipment damage, expensive professional filter cleaning or replacement ($500-1500)

Monthly

  • Filter cartridge/sand cleaning — 30 min, spring, summer, fall. DIY: yes ($10-30 (cleaning solution once per season)); pro: $150-250 (professional filter cleaning).
    Deep clean filter media. For cartridge: remove from tank, rinse with garden hose, soak in cleaning solution if heavily soiled. For sand: use filter cleaner or backwash multiple times. Extend filter life by 1-2 years.
    If skipped: Filter degrades, needs replacement sooner ($300-800), water quality declines, chlorine ineffectiveness increases
  • Equipment inspection (pump, filter, heater) — 10 min, year-round. DIY: yes ($0); pro: $0.
    Visual inspection of pump for leaks, filter tank for cracks, heater for proper operation. Listen for unusual noises. Check all connections and gauges. Early detection saves thousands.
    If skipped: Small leaks become floods, filter cracks cause water loss, equipment fails catastrophically, expensive emergency repairs ($500-2000+)
  • Vinyl liner inspection and repair — 20 min, spring, summer, fall. DIY: yes (for patches) ($10-20 (patch kit supplies)); pro: $300-800 (patch); $1500-5000 (replacement).
    Inspect vinyl for tears, wrinkles, leaks, discoloration. Patch small tears with vinyl patch kit. Large tears/wrinkles need professional repair or replacement ($1500-5000).

Annual and seasonal

    Remove winter cover, inspect for damage, clean debris, start pump/filter, chemically treat water (shocking, balancing), brush and vacuum. LA pools may not need full winterization but spring cleaning essential.

  • Equipment maintenance (o-rings, gaskets, pump bearings) — 60 min, fall, winter. DIY: yes (for basic replacement) ($30-80 (service supplies)); pro: $200-400 (professional service).
    Replace pump o-rings, filter gaskets, heater connections annually to prevent leaks. LA hard water causes mineral buildup; annual service extends equipment life 2-5 years.
    If skipped: Leaks develop within 3-6 months, equipment fails prematurely, replacement costs $500-2000+
  • Drain and refill (seasonal) — 180 min, fall, winter. DIY: yes (with caution) ($0 (water cost only)); pro: $200-500 (professional drain/refill).
    Drain 25-30% to dilute high CYA or high alkalinity. Full drain/refill every 3-5 years (less common in LA due to mild winters). LA water hardness means more frequent partial drains.

    If skipped: 1/4 inch daily loss = 40+ gallons/day = $20-30/day water waste, structural damage, equipment starvation
